Sunday’s micro-burst over Pittsburgh serves as a good reminder that every family should have its own emergency plan and supply kit in the event of a storm, fire or other emergency. Vincentian employees should also review and update your contact information in ADP in case you need to be contacted via text, phone or email during a crisis.

Here’s a checklist of what your emergency plan should include. Visit the Pittsburgh Ready City website for additional resources.

  • Discuss with your family the type of hazards you may encounter.
  • Find shelter locations and requirements.
  • Determine escape routes and establish a meeting place.
  • Have an out-of-state friend/family member as a contact.
  • Plan now for your pet’s safety and/or shelter.
  • Keep a list of emergency telephone numbers.
  • Check your homeowner’s insurance policy; flood damage is usually not covered.
  • Stock non-perishable emergency supplies.
  • Get your portable disaster supply kit assembled and ready.
  • Fill gas containers with fuel for portable generators.
  • Fully charge batteries for cell phones and computers prior to storm.
  • Check your radio and flashlights, replace or have extra batteries on hand.
  • Prepare three days of food, water and medicines for each family member (at least two gallons water per day, per person).
  • Be sure to have emergency cash for essential purchases.
  • Identify and protect personal, medical, and financial records.
  • Know basic first aid and CPR and keep a first-aid kit.
